Ice swimming, or winter swimming as a broader concept, is not a new concept, but the popularity has grown tremendously in recent years. More and more people have dared to immerse themselves in icy water, but what is the factor or factors that make people addicted to it?
Ice swimming has been studied a lot and it is also said to have numerous different health benefits. For many, the thought of immersing into icy water seems impossible, but many who are enthusiastic about ice swimming say that it is so addictive that they must get into the cold water regularly. Once you dare to try it and get to experience the following good feeling, there is no going back!
We decided to explore the world of ice swimming. This time we didn’t dive into the frozen water ourselves, but we took Maiju and Anna with us, who are both keen ice swimmers. To our delight, the weather favored us, and we were able to enjoy the wonderful sunshine. There could not have been a more perfect way to enjoy a lovely winter day.
The day was also made unique by the fact that we finally had the long-desired dusty rose poncho in our hands, and Maiju had the honor of being the first to wear it. Maiju fell in love with this straight away, and no wonder because the dusty rose poncho looked great on her!
Along with the photoshoots, we interviewed Maiju and Anna a bit, because we were really interested in knowing what makes the ice swimming so important to them. Maiju says that she loves ice swimming because of the good feeling that comes from it. “Every time after ice swimming, it feels like you’re walking on cotton candy, that’s the best part. You feel so good both physically and mentally, it resets the brain.”
Anna thinks the same. “I also feel that ice swimming takes care of my body and mind. I always go to swim alone, so it’s my own moment of relaxation. I feel that ice swimming also strengthens my own relationship with nature, which is why I prefer to visit a lake rather than an inside pool.”
Maiju and Anna encourage everyone to try ice swimming. “If you’ve never tried ice swimming, I encourage you to go boldly. The first session can feel horrible and too cold, but when you go there again, you start to get used to it. And you don’t have to be in the water for a long time, it’s enough to just go and get wet. And you can always take a friend with you. It´s always easier when there is friend beside”, encourages Maiju.
“Don’t make it a performance. Do not count visits or minutes. Go when you feel good, that’s enough”, reminds Anna.
Proper equipment plays an important role in ice swimming. It is significantly more comfortable to go into cold water when you have swimming shoes on your feet, swimming gloves on your hands and on your head, for example, a hair towel to prevent the heat from evaporating and to protect your hair from getting wet. And most importantly – after a dip, there’s nothing better than wrapping yourself in a warm and soft bathrobe, a handy poncho, or a big fluffy towel. A bamboo morning gown is also a great companion for an ice swimming, as it packs into a small space. When purchasing ice swimming equipment, you should think about what works best for you!
